Location: Trikora, Tanjung Pinang, Bintan
Wow whee! I had the chance to assist Siti in her seagrass fieldwork. So I quickly packed my bag again for another round of fieldwork... :)
Our stay was at a beach side resort, with a magnificent view of the seas... The beach stretch is known as Trikora and it is 42 km away from Tanjung Pinang.

Fieldwork started at Malang Rapat, and after work, we had a swim around the reef. Here is quite a funny shot of how the tiny fishes disrupted the photos. The reef was mostly sandy and had large boulders. The main coral was probably the Acropora sp.

We also found fishers laying this drift net bubu! And this net catches almost any other fish like this poor butterflyfish and parrotfish.

Some photographs of the things I saw during my dives...
Acropora sp.

Tridacna crocea! So brilliant blue!

The islet opposite the reef...

Other clams were spotted amongst the seagrass beds! :) Although they cannot be found in high densities, the clam population there seem stable.

I saw this huge catfish lying around under the sun...

Sun set at Teluk Bakau...

Seagrass beds at Teluk Bakau is magnificent!

Guess who?? :)

Siti was building two shading frames and left light loggers to monitor light changes over 2 weeks. Over the few days of work, we also set up light loggers at various points on the seagrass beds to monitor the light intensities. At the same time, students from the local university came by to learn more about seagrass identification and fieldwork.

The students listening attentively to Siti while she explains and elaborates the distinctive features of the seagrass species.

Finally on the last day of work! Here we are on the sampan, rowing for shore as the motor has broken down. :P

Victory leap!

Some shots of life around the beach... Here are the two boys: Dedi (sitting) was really helpful during our entire trip in Bintan - from steering the sampan to serving us food.

Trikora - Pondok Susy is the resort... :)

Adi was so cute but at the same time, very mischievous and spoiled. He keeps whining...

Our last day at Tanjung Pinang, we saw this fantastic signboard.... lol... How 80s... :)

Till then! :)
